Porsche has unveiled a new version of the 911, but this one isn’t going to be found at your local cars and coffee event, as it’s a track-only GT4 R.
This 911 GT4 R has been revealed as the replacement to the 718 GT4, which recently ceased production.
According to Porsche, the 911 platform allows for a wider track, a more powerful engine, and better electronic development.
Like the road-going GT3, the 911 GT4 R is powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-litre flat six engine.
This engine produces 382kW, although it will be delivered with a category-mandated restrictor limiting power to 316kW.
Though the 911 GT4 R shares quite a bit aesthetically with the 911 Cup car, there are significant differences equipment-wise.
The wheels are around 2.5cm narrower, and use a five-lug locking pattern rather than the centre-lock wheels on the Cup car.
The rear wing is also slightly smaller, although it retains its adjustability.
Speaking on the 911 GT4 R project, Porsche Motorsport vice president Thomas Laudenbach was excited to bring fresh metal to the track.
“With the new racing car based on the Porsche 911 GT3, we are taking our successful GT4 programme to a new level.
“The combination of iconic 911 DNA and the tried-and-tested GT4 concept creates a unique offering in the market.
“Our decision to bring the 911 platform into the GT4 category underlines the growing importance of this class in international motorsport.
“GT4 has evolved from an entry-level segment into a highly competitive, globally relevant racing platform.”
While New Zealand availability is yet to be confirmed for the 911 GT4 R, European pricing has been released.
On the other side of the world, this 911 starts from €265,000, which translates to around $533,545 NZD.
