Suspended KZN Hawks head and Matlala associate Lesetja Senona resigns

Suspended KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head Lesetja Senona has resigned – and his lawyer says it’s because he knew there were people in the unit who were “hell-bent” on his removal – and “he won’t give them the satisfaction”.

Speaking to News24 on Tuesday, Senona’s attorney Rudolph Baloyi insisted his client had “demonstrated” that he was not involved in the 2021 theft of cocaine valued at R200 million from a poorly secured Hawks building in Port Shepstone.

Senona had been asked about that theft at the Madlanga Commission, where he had also been questioned about his close friendship with criminally accused tenderpreneur Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala.

The commission will evaluate all this testimony when it releases its final report to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Senona, now 60, has elected to step down before that happens.

“He has reached retirement age; he also has no interest in the politics of the Hawks,” said Baloyi.
