Manchester City forgotten midfielder Kalvin Phillips is hoping to put his injuries behind him this season to kickstart his career. The former England international endured another disappointing campaign last year as he only managed three games on loan at Sheffield United in the Championship.
It continued a rotten run for Phillips, who has been unable to find his feet anywhere since moving to City for Β£45million all the way back in 2022. Loan spells at West Ham, Ipswich and Sheffield United have failed to provide the spark that the 30-year-old has needed, with Phillips picking up a number of injury issues as a result of not playing regularly.
While he is still under contract at the Etihad until 2028, he has not been part of City's plans for some time now and the club will again look for him to move on this summer. A permanent deal would be preferred, although City and Phillips have so far had to settle for loan deals.
The former Leeds star is hoping to transform his fortunes and get back to playing regularly, bringing an end to the disappointments over recent seasons where he hasn't been able to, such as his last loan at Sheffield United. "It was alright, all two [three] games of it," he told the Yorkshire Evening Post. "I suffered an injury which kept me out for the rest of the season.
"That's been the problem for me the last three years of not playing regularly, it's made me acquire more injuries and stuff like that. So I'm looking forward to hopefully having a good season, actually."
As well as finding a move for Phillips, City sporting director Hugo Viana is under pressure to transform the City midfield this summer. Phillips, Matheus Nunes, Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders have all been signed by the club in the last five years and none have been able to hold down a regular place in midfield.
Elliot Anderson will arrive at the Etihad this summer for a club record Β£116m, and more may be needed. Sandro Tonali and Morocco teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi are among the players that City hold an interest in as Viana surveys his options.
